So, it’s official… we’ve worked our behinds off for too long now, Karl & I need a vacation! (if you want proof, check out the recent portfolio updates on the CuteGecko website… more, more & more to come!!)
In between our hectic days, we’ve actually found time to plan a trip – & not your regular, every-day type of trip either. We’re road-trippin’ across the country! Ok, so what’s been planned then? Well, we have a map, some pins of where we want to stop off and no other real plan. After living and travelling in Australia in our old VW Kombi, we really enjoyed the free spirited nature of being able to head wherever we pleased and wander wherever the wind takes us. Of course, we’ll be working while we’re away (no rest for the wicked!) but I have a feeling our productivity might not keep up with us.
Now is where I need some help. I’m including a little google map of where we plan to take our adventure. If you’ve ever been anywhere near this little purple line & loved it, drop me a comment and let us know. We would love to for you to share some of your experiences or recommendations.
GO!

So Banff is nice but so is Canmore and Lake Loise and even Calgary if you are going to be close you should visit them all. I loved it so much in Alberta that i went twice and I wanted to stay…I still do! I felt Vancover was the city that I should be living in instead of london it was just so comfortable and pretty. You will have a wonderful trip and next time you should check out the east coast where my other favourite places are.
Hi Amy!
That looks like a FABUOLOUS trip. Caleb and I have done most of it in bits and pieces and I could talk for ages about all the great things to see and do along that route!
I guess my biggest piece of advice would be to get off of Highway 1 (the TransCanada) in Southern Saskatchewan. We were out in the southwest of the province a couple of years ago visiting family and Caleb didn’t believe me when I said that Saskatchewan wasn’t flat until we got off the TransCanada. Southern Saskatchewan is easily one of my favourite places and is GORGEOUS with its big rolling hills and wide open spaces. My family lives on a farm near McCord, SK and if you could get down to that area I promise you won’t be disappointed by the beautiful scenery.
Again, I could go on and on about places on that route….we’ll have to get together :) If you can, try to get to Puskaskwa National Park too (near Marathon) and for some good Gouda cheese at ThuderOak Cheese just outside Thunder Bay.
Have a great trip!
Laura
I’m going to write you a giant email of everywhere you need to EAT in Winnipeg and Banff.
We did a similar trip as a family when I was kid. My only recommendation would be to make sure you do the return trip south of the border… We followed I-90 (more or less) from Washington state straight over to Chicago – feels now like a whole different adventure.
Last time I was out West, I tried something called Scrambling. It’s basically unprotected climbing of mountains. It’s more intense than simply hiking, but a pretty awesome thing to do for those of us who aren’t quite experienced in mountain climbing. The altitude kicked the crap out of me, but it was a really worthwhile experience. I would recommend doing an easy one to start – I did not find it all that easy! And I can’t remember the exact mountain I did, but it was just outside of Canmore, Alberta on the way to Banff.
Here’s a good list: http://izsak02.com/Alberta.html
Wow, these suggestions are amazing – so many awesome ideas! keep ‘em coming… I want to get this map filled with important places to visit!

When do you think you’ll pass through Thunder Bay? I’ll be there for a week by the end of next week. Me and the family are taking a weeks vacation and we’ll be there from July 7th on.
We lived in Kamloops, BC for several years and loved it. The scenery is gorgeous – basically the Mojave desert, but in Canada. If you’re looking for a spot to eat, try Sanbiki – a Japanese restaurant located downtown Kamloops, with some of the best Japanese food we’ve ever had (go figure!).
Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops has a very active International exchange program, so the city is a lot more multicultural than you first expect.
That sounds like an awesome trip, thanks for sharing. We love sushi so we’ll be sure to check out the Japanese restaurants. Cheers!
