We made it, <br>We're in England

We made it,
We’re in England

April 14, 2010  |  Travel  |  2 Comments

After a long and sleepless night on the plane – sitting separately from Karl…
arg Air Canada! – We arrived in London at 8:45am this morning.

Our day today:

• meeting Karl’s mum who’s totally awesome and has been incredibly welcoming to me
• driving the short drive from Heathrow to Karl’s childhood home
• looking at uber-cute photo’s of baby Karl
• taking a long, long nap to catch up on the missed sleep
• a long walk around Feltham and the park near the house
• going to the local Tesco‘s so that Karl could drool over all of his favourite foods that he can’t find in Canada
• spending the evening in. Relaxing, chatting and getting to know Karl’s mum

Overall – totally awesome experience so far.  Karl has been pointing out Smart Car’s to me & I’ve been completely missing them because they’re about the same size as most other cars.  The roads are so narrow, I’d have a smash-up for sure if I drove anywhere! Also, English children have the most adorable accents. I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s excursions and meeting more of Karl’s people.

Heading to England <br>on Tuesday!!!

Ok, so this pic was taken in Niagara Falls, but it works, right?

Heading to England
on Tuesday!!!

April 9, 2010  |  Travel  |  No Comments

Last week, Karl & I booked out flights for England – Tuesday!  I’m ridiculously excited as I’ve never been there and I’m going to meet Karl’s entire family & old friends for the first time.  It’s a bit funny that we’ve been together for almost two years & I still haven’t met them. I guess that’s what happens when you meet your partner in Australia and come straight home to Canada before going to his hometown.
Luckily, I met his sister & brother-in law last October when they came to visit us here – so I’ve got a few ally’s when I get there :)

We’re still going to have to work while we’re there (we’re flat-out busy at the moment) so I’ll try to blog a bit during the trip.
Wish us luck!!

KW Web Design & Tech Meetup

KW Web Design & Tech Meetup

April 8, 2010  |  Events and Local Goodness  |  1 Comment

I know I’ve talked about this meetup group on the CuteGecko blog, but it’s an awesome meetup, so it’s worth mentioning twice.  First of all, a Meetup is a place where people of many different backgrounds can find people with the same interests. This website lets you define your location, then browse the many different groups in your area.
For Karl & I, the KW Web Design & Tech Meetup was one of the first networking events we went to when we arrived in Canada way back in May of last year.  At the time, the group seemed quite interesting, so we went back again and again throughout the year.  Thankfully, we’ve met some really awesome friends through this group and I’ve got to thank Julia for organizing the whole thing.

The April event is held tonight, in a new venue, Ali Baba Steakhouse/Encore.  Interestingly enough, the group moved recently from the Huether Hotel because of the number of people that want to attend.  The last event had a maximum of 50 guests – this month I think it’s 100. We’re all excited to hear this month’s speakers too…

Adam from SeyDoggy Systems is doing a jQuery demo!
Linda will be showing us a trick to replace HTML frames without converting to PHP
Mike will be presenting Flash vs. HTML5 Video
Julia will end with a smattering of Adobe app tips/tricks
Hope to see everyone there!  If you haven’t RSVP’d yet, do it HERE!

We’ve met some great people and shared a few pints and many more stories. If startups are close to your hear and you enjoy a good pint every once in a while, we’d love you have you come and join us.

My love/hate relationship <br>with CAA

My love/hate relationship
with CAA

April 2, 2010  |  Everything Else  |  No Comments

I’ve had the wonderful privilege of using my CAA membership 4 times in the past 5 months. Yesterday being one of them.  (The tow truck in this photo was not CAA, this was way back in Australia after being stranded in out Kombi).

  • I love CAA because if I couldn’t call them, I would have no idea who to call
  • I hate CAA because the phone operators are never very nice & consistently make me feel bad for calling – that’s why I have a membership, right?
  • I love them because the tow-truck drivers are ALWAYS very very kind and understanding.  We’ve had the same driver twice & when I see him next
    we’ll be old pals
  • I hate CAA because now that I’ve made such good use of my CAA membership card, I’ve been cut off – maybe I don’t have a premium enough membership?

I’ve almost positive that Karl & I have had the worst car luck in history.
When will it all end!!!??

My favourite Book, <br>The Time Traveler's Wife

My favourite Book,
The Time Traveler’s Wife

March 31, 2010  |  Book Shelf  |  No Comments

The first book I ever read that wasn’t cheesy chic lit (ouch, if you read the Urban Dictionary definition of this term, it sounds awful!) was The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. I was completely blown away by the power of this book!  If you haven’t seen the movie yet, you must go to the Library and check this one out.  Although I really enjoyed the film and this was the only book to movie experience I’ve ever enjoyed, the book was still much much better.

It is a love story about a man with a genetic disorder that causes him to time travel unpredictably, and about his wife, an artist, who has to cope with his frequent absences and dangerous experiences.

It’s a book that’s hard to put down and easy to dive into.
Let me know if you’ve read it and love it too!

I Love Toasted Walnut <br>Green Tea.. Here's Why

I Love Toasted Walnut
Green Tea.. Here’s Why

March 30, 2010  |  Mug and Plate  |  1 Comment

A Day in my (work) life:

I’m typically a cold person & spring/winter weather doesn’t help one bit!  I make a habit of working with my tea sitting on my desk under my nose and in front of my computer (to keep me warm).  Recently, after picking up my new favourite tea, I’ve started making more and more tea just so I can smell it while it’s hot. yum.

Traditional Chinese medicine says walnuts are a warming food. Which makes sense, because this is the kind of tea you spontaneously want to cozy up to on a cold winter afternoon. The comforting, lightly bitter taste of toasted walnuts is sweetened and deepened with dried pineapple, coconut, almond and organic green tea. Sip it in front of an open fire and chase away the cold.

Who can say no to that??  Certainly not me.  Tea Cheers!

A little music group called 'The Weepies'

A little music group called ‘The Weepies’

March 29, 2010  |  Mix Tape  |  2 Comments

I first heard of The Weepies back in 2008 on a ‘best of indie‘ list.  It was their song “All this Beauty” that really caught my ear, so I learned more about the group.

The Weepies are an indie pop-folk band fronted by singer-songwriters Deb Talan and Steve Tannen. Their music has been described as “subtly intoxicating folk-pop”

The couple, married with a son, began their musical road-trip back in 2006 and have been turning audiences on ever since. My absolute favourite song of theirs, ‘World Spins Madly On‘ never ever gets old – even when I play it to Karl on repeat :) After pointing a few of my friends to their music, I thought I’d share it on here too.  So check them out, you’ll love it – well, you’ll love it if you’re like me and you love tweepop!
