For those of you living in the Kitchener-Waterloo Region, you’ve probably already heard of Ideas Transform. If you haven’t, here’s your chance to be part of something awesome in the area.
When tackling complex problems, you often need complex solutions. Design processes often start by forming the design team, an interdisciplinary group of people who bring specific knowledge, skills and enthusiasm to the table. If you’re here, we’re considering you part of the team. There’s no specific plan, just an opportunity to connect with people and ideas—this project will be successful if you participate, and by signing up you’re doing just that, so thank you.
IdeasTransform is the amazing brain-child of Brock Hart, a local celebrity (you can also hear him weekly on the 100 with Hilary, Martin & Bevan… another awesome local initiative that I’ll blog about soon.) I signed up for no reason other than to see what could happen on the site. It is rapidly growing and more and more people have joined since I did a few months ago. It is generally a place to post local events, discussions and ideas. It can really turn into anything we as a community make it into. Head on over, sign up, add me as a friend & we’ll see what happens from there!

I drive a Chevy Cobalt. It’s pretty plain, no reason to throw a party. It’s what I used to drive that’s exciting. Karl (my other half) and I drove and lived in a 1974 VW Kombi last year in Australia. Yes, it’s the beat-up one featured in the photo above and it was an absolute dream!
We came across it on a summery January day on Bondi Beach – our favourite location for skateboarding, swimming and sunbathing. We fell in love with the old girl, naming her Millie (oddly enough my mom’s name is Millie, but she’s not the size of a caravan.. quite the opposite – she’s tiny).
In our van/home, we spent afternoons parked beside the ocean, working on our laptops. Yes, we were still building our graphic design company at the time, but talk about inspiration! There’s nothing like listening to the ocean, playing a bit of Thirsty Merc (on the speakers Karl wired in himself) and designing for clients in the back of a retro vehicle.
It was a pop-top, so I had a comfy sleeping space above the roof and we owned a propane cooking thing for eating. It couldn’t have been done without some great Aussie friends that let us crash and shower at their place whenever needed. During the unfortunate times that we broke down, it was easy to park on a residential street for the evening and work out the mechanical issues in the morning.
I would go back to those moments in a heart-beat, it was such a freeing experience. You can never imagine how little maintenance a person needs until you have nothing but tin roof over your head. If you ever get a chance for a similar experience, make sure to do it yourself… does anyone have an interesting vehicle story to share?

That’s me! I’m a rising-star graphic designer who loves graphic design, tea, reading and local events. I’m inspired by 40′s & 50′s antiques, crafting, sewing, music and everything design related.
I live and work in Waterloo, Ontario, & own my own graphic design agency - CuteGecko. I started this blog because I’ve recently become a blogger on my company website and have found that some of my post ideas are not necessarily what a professional would look for when shopping for a corporate graphic designer! So this one’s for you… anyone interested in my online life and for my friends looking to get the low-down on local stuff. I’ll be writing about my personal projects, things that inspire me and some local events that I take part in. If you’re interested in my ramblings then please come back or RSS my site! Cheers!
